City of Nelson welcomes Canada Celebrates the FIFA World Cup 2026™ - The City of Nelson and the Nelson Soccer Association are thrilled to announce that Canada Celebrates the FIFA World Cup 2026™ is making a stop in Nelson to celebrate with the community on June 24, 2026 at Lakeside Park. The day of activities is centered around the live FIFA World Cup 2026™ match screening of the Canada vs. Switzerland game at 12pm, and will include free, family-friendly, and inclusive programming, live entertainment, cultural presentations, refreshments, soccer-themed activities, and more throughout the afternoon.

To welcome residents and visitors from across the region, all West Kootenay Transit routes will be free throughout the day, including service from Selkirk College in Castlegar to Kaslo, and Nakusp.

Workshop - Medicinal Plant Salve & Tincture Making Workshop - Plant-based remedies have been used for millennia to treat ailments and to maintain health. In this workshop, led by Sinixt knowledge keepers Faith Zacherle and Kalaya Love Zacherle, participants will learn about the medicinal properties of locally available plants and then be guided through three different processes to make samples of salves, tinctures, and toners that they can take home with them. Nelson is joining communities across Canada in celebrating the FIFA World Cup™ with four days of soccer, music, and community events. To welcome residents and visitors from across the region, all West Kootenay Transit routes will be free throughout the day, including service from Selkirk College in Castlegar to Kaslo, and Nakusp. The festivities beginning on June 24 will feature live match viewing, family-friendly activities, sponsor and skills booths, food vendors, and a beer garden. The celebration continues with Nelson Soccer Days, running June 24–28 and transforming downtown Nelson into a hub of activity with live music, match watch parties, special promotions, and community events.

News Release - Urging preparedness as wildfire, drought risks increase - As British Columbia enters another summer that could be hotter and drier than usual, the Province is urging people and communities to prepare for potential impacts of wildfire, drought and water scarcity.

The River Forecast Centre snowpack survey provides insight into how people and communities in B.C. could be affected by drought. The latest survey released on June 1 2026, show B.C.’s overall snowpack is at 64% of normal. Comparatively, in June 2025, the provincial snowpack averaged 44% of normal. Low snowpack, early snowmelt and warm seasonal weather forecasts are elevating drought hazards for this upcoming season.

The 1K is a fun kids run. The 5K run/walk is along the waterfront. The 10K run has rolling hills but ends in a fast, flat finish. This distance is chip timed.

Media Release - Southern Michif Introductory Language Online Course - This course consists of 6 interactive 90-minute online lessons on Tuesday evenings from September 15 – October 20 taking place at 6pm PT.

This course is open to everyone, and is offered free of charge through a partnership with Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC). If you are a non-Indigenous learner we ask that you review these reflections prior to the first session.

Southern Michif is a traditional language of the Métis people. It is also known as Michif, Michif Cree, Heritage Michif, aan Cree, and aañ Crii. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the rich Métis heritage and acquire fundamental Michif language skills. Led by a traditional Michif speaker Marie Schoenthal, this workshop promises an immersive experience that celebrates and preserves Métis culture.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

Still Life...and Death by Tamara Koenig-Fraser - a third generation Kootenay child, born and raised in Nelson, who was lured away from this beautiful valley by the excitement and possibilities of Cities. The contrasts were stimulating and expansive but the Lake and Forests eventually called her home. Kaslo has held her since 1989.
Riven by Maggie Tchir - explores “our humanity; the relationships we cultivate with others through our personal and collective voices, highlighting global environmental and social justice/political viewpoints”. Her practice is process-based with a strong interest in materiality and making. She lives and maintains a studio in Nelson.
