Media Release - Notice about Outdoor Stoves & other Wood Burning devices during Campfire Ban - Outdoor stoves or devices that burn wood are prohibited when a campfire prohibition is enacted unless they are vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building. This includes devices such as grills, fire pits, pizza ovens, wood-fired hot tubs, saunas, smokers and related devices.
Outdoor stoves or devices are allowed if:
- They burn charcoal briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel as a fuel source
- Has a flame height less than 15 cm
- Is certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC).

Media Release - Stage 1 water conservation measures in effect for all RDCK water systems
These measures will remain in place through to September 30.
Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures Include:
- Watering of lawns (Including new lawns), gardens, trees, and shrubs ONLY between the hours of 7:00 pm to 10:00 am
- Watering using drip irrigation, a watering can, and or hand held hose is permitted at anytime.

Performance - Mount Sentinel students stage scenes from Love and Information - Mount Sentinel Secondary School Academy of Performance and Media will present scenes from British playwright Caryl Churchill’s Love and Information. The ninth annual year-end showcase features a cast of 23 student actors, five student directors and six students working backstage in technical production, all part of the school’s film, theatre and media production program based in the Slocan Valley.

Work Party - Kaslo River Trail Broom Bash with KCISS, KORTS, and FireSmart - Help remove invasive Scotch broom and help protect native plants, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce wildfire risk, all while learning new skills and connecting with your community. By joining this event you are supporting FireSmarting the Kaslo community! With guidance from CKISS staff you will be using loppers to CUT Scotch broom. It’s hands-on, satisfying work, every plant you remove helps restore the area for native species and makes a real, visible difference.

Media Release - Reporting Period: June 1 – June 6, 2026 - During the reporting period, Nelson Police Department officers responded to a broad range of calls for service throughout the city. These included property-related offences, suspicious activity, traffic incidents, wellbeing checks, public assistance calls, and requests for support involving partner agencies.
Notable Calls for Service:
- Vehicle theft investigations: Officers responded to three separate vehicle theft files on June 6.
- Theft investigations: Police investigated several theft reports at various locations throughout Nelson.
- Traffic-related calls: Officers attended multiple motor vehicle incidents and traffic enforcement files during the reporting period.
- Suspicious activity: Officers responded to several reports of suspicious persons and suspicious circumstances in various areas of the city.
- Wellbeing checks and public assistance: Members conducted multiple wellbeing checks and responded to a number of requests for assistance from the public.
- Abandoned 911 calls: Officers attended several abandoned 911 calls during the week.
- Additional notable files: Police also responded to investigations involving fraud, extortion, assault, arson, domestic incidents, property matters, and Mental Health Act-related calls

News Release - Castlegar RCMP investigating property related offences - On June 5, 2026, a resident in the 600-block of 20th Street of Castlegar, BC, reported to police they noted items in their carport had been disturbed and their security camera had been damaged. Upon the homeowner reviewing security footage, they discovered that at approximately midnight the night prior a lone male was observed in the carport. The suspect clearly saw the security camera as he allegedly proceeded to damage it before stealing it, along with a bag of refundable recycling which was later located in a nearby field.
Three days later, on June 8, 2026, a Castlegar resident in the 700-block of 15th Street was alerted by their security system that an image was recorded at 3:15am. Upon the homeowner reviewing their security footage a lone male was observed biking onto the property attempting to gain access to the locked garage. The homeowner spoke with a neighbor who reviewed their own security, noting a similar male walk through her backyard. Entry was not gained to either of the properties and the suspect left without causing damage or stealing property.

Media Release - Southern Michif Introductory Language Online Course - This course consists of 6 interactive 90-minute online lessons on Tuesday evenings from September 15 – October 20 taking place at 6pm PT.
This course is open to everyone, and is offered free of charge through a partnership with Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC). If you are a non-Indigenous learner we ask that you review these reflections prior to the first session.
Southern Michif is a traditional language of the Métis people. It is also known as Michif, Michif Cree, Heritage Michif, aan Cree, and aañ Crii. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the rich Métis heritage and acquire fundamental Michif language skills. Led by a traditional Michif speaker Marie Schoenthal, this workshop promises an immersive experience that celebrates and preserves Métis culture.

Fundraising - 50/50 MayDraw - The Rescue Society was formed with the goal of enhancing rapid response water rescue services for the West Arm and Outlet communities of Kootenay Lake. The Rescue Society raises funds to support emergency response on Kootenay lake. We will be hosting a 50/50 draw each month. Funds raised by this raffle will support the purchase of a boathouse to ensure rapid response year-round.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

Fundraising Opportunity and Celebration of the lives of Detective Wade Tittemore and Constable Mathieu Nolet - Nelson Police Department Memorial Run/Walk. 5K Run/Walk; 10K Run & 1K Kids Fun Run - This community event brings together runners, walkers, families, friends and supporters to raise funds for a scholarship in their name, awarded to a deserving LV Rogers student. The 1K is a fun kids run. The 5K run/walk is along the waterfront. The 10K run has rolling hills but ends in a fast, flat finish. This distance is chip timed.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project
The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

The exhibition follows the club’s long-running Photo Salon print competition, which is open to photographers of all skill levels across the region and beyond. Opening Reception June 5.

Still Life...and Death by Tamara Koenig-Fraser - a third generation Kootenay child, born and raised in Nelson, who was lured away from this beautiful valley by the excitement and possibilities of Cities. The contrasts were stimulating and expansive but the Lake and Forests eventually called her home. Kaslo has held her since 1989.

Riven by Maggie Tchir - explores “our humanity; the relationships we cultivate with others through our personal and collective voices, highlighting global environmental and social justice/political viewpoints”. Her practice is process-based with a strong interest in materiality and making. She lives and maintains a studio in Nelson.
