Media Release - Nelson Police Launch NHL Street Hockey Program for Area Youth - The Nelson Police Department is inviting local youth to hit the pavement this spring with the launch of a new NHL Street hockey program designed to be fun, inclusive, and accessible to every child in the community.

The program runs, May 30, June 6, and June 13 at the Lions Park basketball court.

Each session will include a 20-minute practice followed by a game consisting of two 20-minute halves,

with games scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m

As well as cutting rough for cabs, I have seen the odd facet come from here. Loads of material, no shortage of specimens. I wonderful playground, and it's very close to town. On the Sunday, we'll do a tailgate sale in town. Stay tuned for details when the event gets little closer.

Speaker - Genevieve Robertson Artist Talk - Genevieve Robertson was artist-in-residence at Oxygen Art Centre from November 12 to December 20, 2025. Robertson works at the intersection of visual art and environmental studies. Her practice is grounded in drawing and painting, extending to video, installation, and various forms of collective work and collaboration. Through long-term place-based research projects, her work explores anthropogenic impacts on ecology and the climate, and the intelligence and interconnection of the life systems of which we are part.

Media Release - Flood Watch issued for the entire West Kootenay Lake region - Warmer weather over the past few days has led to increased snowmelt rates and rising river levels through the region. Severe weather, including moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to begin later Friday and extend through Monday and early Tuesday. Current modelling indicates the potential for the heaviest rains in the West Kootenay region - 50 to 100+ mm are expected through Monday.

Media Release - Stage 1 water conservation measures in effect for all RDCK water systems starting June 1

Effective, Monday, June 1, 2026, mandatory Stage 1 water conservation measures will be implemented across all Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) water systems. These measures will remain in place from June 1 through September 30. Stage 1 may increase to one of three additional stages should demand increase significantly, hot and dry weather persists, or if reservoirs decline to critically low levels.

Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures Include:

Watering of lawns (Including new lawns), gardens, trees, and shrubs ONLY between the hours of 7:00 pm to 10:00 am
Watering using drip irrigation, a watering can, and or hand held hose is permitted at anytime.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

Scuba Diving at Slocan City Park May 26th - We had the urge to submerge so badly! Our work schedules finally lined up! We made big plans to go beyond the barge wreck and to the old Slocan City 5 ton truck that came off the road way at the tunnel a long time ago. I've dived it several times but always with a boat. I figured we might be able to reach the truck with our scooter! We passed the barge and the visibility was not good! We searched the area for 30 minutes before giving up and heading back to our exit point. 57 min total dive time to 55 feet at our deepest depth. Darn! Great dive with my bestest dive buddy! Can't always find the treasure on every dive. So grateful to try on every dive! I must admit, however, I'm more than a little bummed out and disappointed in my navigation skills that I didn't find that truck! lol I see I've left out the 'r' in one of my captions! Around.... not aound. Uggh!

Gentle Resistance by Tracy Fillion - This ongoing project began with an interest in the intersection of design, sport, and feminism, and has evolved into a space to hold and transform growing internalized rage in response to widespread social, environmental, and human rights violations. The boxing glove serves as a central form—both a symbol of conflict and a container for emotion. Constructed through the slow, deliberate process of hand weaving and textile assembly, the work holds a tension between method and feeling: a quiet, careful making that contrasts with an undercurrent of anger.

Still Life...and Death by Tamara Koenig-Fraser - a third generation Kootenay child, born and raised in Nelson, who was lured away from this beautiful valley by the excitement and possibilities of Cities. The contrasts were stimulating and expansive but the Lake and Forests eventually called her home. Kaslo has held her since 1989.
Riven by Maggie Tchir - explores “our humanity; the relationships we cultivate with others through our personal and collective voices, highlighting global environmental and social justice/political viewpoints”. Her practice is process-based with a strong interest in materiality and making. She lives and maintains a studio in Nelson.

Are you eligible for a FREE AC?

Low-income and heat vulnerable customers, who are referred through their regional health authority's Home Care Program, may be eligible for the free AC program.

OR,

If you have a chronic respiratory or immune illness portable AC’s can be claimed as a medical expense.
