The Time Has Come For Time Change To Go! - I was going to write about how important it would be for us to ditch changing our clocks twice a year and then the Provincial Government took the wind out of my sails! I don't have that reason to be grumpy anymore! I do have a reason to be thankful!
March 4, 1897 was the date of City of Nelson's Incorporation - I feel welcomed here and because of that, I have a need to support community. We are about 11,000 people, but we are not separate - we are one community and we are dependent on each other - not only for physical needs, but also for emotional needs as well. It makes a difference if we say nice - real - words to people we know and people we don't know. Nelson is known for its different qualities - The quality I like the most is "Nelson is a friendly town" I look forward to seeing you on Baker St. and maybe having a chat. Thank you for being you!

- B.C. will adopt permanent, year-round daylight saving time after clocks shift forward an hour on Sunday, March 8, 2026
- People and businesses will have eight months to prepare for the elimination of the next time change, previously scheduled for Nov. 1, 2026
- Eliminating twice-yearly time changes reduces disruptions for families, simplifies scheduling and provides an extra hour of evening light during the winter months

Media Release - Bailed out: NPD Jail’n’Bail raises over $10,000 for local Special Olympics athletes - All twelve business owners and community leaders posted bail yesterday, raising over $10,000 for local athletes participating in BC Special Olympics events.
The inaugural Jail’n’Bail, organized by the Nelson Police Department and the BC Special Olympics Nelson Chapter, collected a dozen community figures on Thursday and ‘booked’ them at the Nelson Squash Club while they worked their contacts to raise bail money. By 5 pm, the total was over $10,000; donations are still being received.

Article - Selkirk College Students Develop Action Plans to Help Shape Nelson’s Future - Rooted in hands-on, place-based learning, the program connects students directly with local governments and community partners. Over the past several months, students have gathered and analyzed local data, researched best practices and drafted action-oriented plans for topics selected from the City’s recently adopted OCP. Topics include affordable housing, climate resilience, transit infrastructure, urban ecology, waste diversion, renewable energy, food security, traditional ecological knowledge, school streets, bicycle parking and more.
Community members are invited to explore the action plans and share their input at an upcoming open house on Tuesday, March 10, from 5 to 7 pm in Mary Hall at the Selkirk College Tenth Street Campus in Nelson. Students will incorporate input from the Open House into their final plans, which they will present to the City of Nelson in April.

KSA delegation presentation to Council - The Kootenay School of the Arts (KSA) working group, represented by West Kootenay Regional Arts Council Executive Director Kallee Lins and Nelson & District Arts Council Executive Director Sydney Black, presented a feasibility study to Council at the February 17 Committee of the Whole meeting. Council members engaged in a thoughtful discussion with the delegates and passed a motion to refer the matter to staff for follow-up.
Staff will now begin discussions with the working group, review the options and requests presented, and consult with qualified professionals and subject-matter experts. Once this work is complete, staff will bring a report forward to Council at a future Regular Council meeting.

News Release - Pre-treated Organics Program extended - Nelson City Council expands Pre-treated Organics Program: Eligible residents are encouraged to sign up online for their FoodCycler. The City’s Pre-treated Organics Program will continue to expand in 2026 with the purchase of up to 1,000 additional FoodCyclers, made available to all interested and eligible Nelson households. Council approved a phased rollout at a special meeting on February 17, 2026, which will allow more residents to participate over time, and the City to enhance public education efforts and explore policies to support the program’s long-term success.

Indigenous Grant Funding Initiatives - Shambhala Music Festival administers two annual funding initiatives: the Indigenous University Bursary Program, and the Indigenous Artist Grant Program.

The Annual Artist Grant is awarded to Indigenous visual or performance artists who wish to share their work with the Shambhala Farmily during our annual event. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, divided between 2 successful applicants: Professional Artist Grant: $3500; Emerging Artist Grant: $1500.

The Indigenous University Bursary program provides non-repayable financial support for First Nations, Métis, or Inuit students who are currently enrolled in (or are applying for) a full-time university or college program in BC or Canada in the 2026/2027 academic year. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, to be divided between up to 10 successful applicants.

Attention Artists and Venues - Artwalk Applications are open! - ArtWalk 2026 applications for artists and venues will be open, until Thursday, April 9th at 11:55pm PST. The Nelson & District Arts Council (NDAC) aims to make the 38th annual ArtWalk another hit summer event for artists, local arts lovers, tourists, and local businesses. This year, NDAC is again asking business owners to consider becoming an ArtWalk venue to support the local arts community as well as beautify their walls. The event populates unique venues with quality, locally produced artwork chosen by the venue operator to fit their walls and business branding.

Call for artist housing: summer residency - We're looking for housesitting / billeting options for three visiting artists in Nelson from July 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The three artists work primarily in textiles across their individual practices and as a collective. They will be engaged in their summer residency at Oxygen Art Centre during this time period. The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.
Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

Your input wanted - Zoning Bylaw Update - With the recent approval of a new Official Community Plan (OCP) it's time to take a look at the City's Zoning Bylaw.
The purpose of the Zoning Bylaw review is to ensure the Bylaw is:
- aligned with the newly adopted Official Community Plan (OCP);
- up-to-date with recent provincial changes to planning and development rules; and
- easier for everyone to read, understand, and use.
Although it may sound like a big task, overall, there are very few major changes being considered; it's mostly a lot of minor changes. Based on past feedback from the public, City staff have identified multiples sections of the Bylaw that could benefit from a re-write to improve clarity and make it less complex.

Help Carla walk, hike and thrive again
Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.
As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.
Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.
Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

"Our amazing friends Robyn Lamb and Andrew Purtill are going through something no one ever expects to face. Andrew has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive sinonasal cancer, and next week he’ll be heading to Vancouver for major surgery to remove the tumour. The surgery will mean the loss of one of his eyes, and he’ll need at least three months to recover and adjust to this huge change.
Anyone who knows Robyn and Andy knows how full of love and kindness they are. They’re the kind of people who have always shown up for everyone else, and now they really need us to show up for them.
While Andrew recovers, Robyn won’t be able to work so she can focus on being there to support him through healing, appointments, and their new normal. This GoFundMe is to help them cover rent, bills, groceries, and travel costs while they get through the next few months.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project
The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history.
The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

SWABBER - The Story of 82 Year Old Ski Racer Bobby Swan - At 82, Bobby "Swabber" Swan carves through Kootenay race courses alongside ski racers seven decades his junior. Every Tuesday, this two-time Olympian transforms Whitewater slopes with his homemade "swabber sticks," setting slalom courses that have become his personal training ground. Though time has tempered his speed, it hasn't touched his dedication. Swabber approaches each run with the meticulous focus of someone who understands that mastery is found in the journey itself, not just the finish line.

This postcard that sold on eBay recently intrigues me to no end. It was taken circa 1919-20 and looks northeast from the roof of the YMCA in Nelson, which is today home to the Royal Canadian Legion and Traction on Demand. This card was made by an Ottawa company called Heliotype, which published a large number of cards, all around the same time. Their lithographs were uniformly poor, but often depicted unusual views like this one.
