Online Training - Whirling Disease in Southeast BC - Whirling disease (Myxobolus cerebralis) has recently been detected in the Columbia Basin and represents a significant emerging threat to salmonid populations and aquatic ecosystems in southeastern British Columbia and beyond. This online training is designed to equip those working in and around freshwater systems with the knowledge and practical tools needed to understand whirling disease and reduce the risk of its spread. From Nelson RCMP April 24, 2026

News Release - Investigators looking for information after identification of human remains in Nelson - Investigators are hoping the public can provide them with information and a timeline for a man who was last seen in December 2023 and whose remains were found 18 months later in Nelson.

On December 24, 2023, Christopher Newton, a 33-year-old Indigenous male, was last confirmed to be in the area of 2-Mile near Nelson, BC. On January 3, 2025, Mr. Newton was reported missing to the Nelson Police Department.

Investigators want to speak with anyone who may have seen Mr. Newton or associated with him between December 24, 2023, and June 4, 2025, when police were alerted to the presence of human remains in the Nelson North Shore 2 -Mile area.

On March 2, 2026, the BC Coroners Service confirmed the identity of the deceased to be Christopher Newton. Christopher’s mother, Christine Moore, pleads, “As Christopher’s mother, I live every day with the heartbreak of missing my son and still not knowing the full truth of what happened to him."

News Release - Three men arrested in 2022 Castlegar homicide -

Three individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the 2022 homicide of 51‑year‑old Jean‑Luc Noel Levesque.

On August 11, 2022, Jean‑Luc Noel Levesque was found unresponsive near the 1800 block of Columbia Avenue in Castlegar. He was not a known resident of the community and was believed to have travelled to Castlegar prior to his death and it is believed to have been a targeted incident.

The BC RCMP E‑Division Major Crime Section assumed conduct of the investigation and worked in partnership with the Castlegar RCMP throughout the nearly four‑year investigation.

On Friday, April 24, 2026, BC RCMP Major Crime Section investigators, with assistance from the Vancouver Police Department, Castlegar RCMP officers, and Nelson RCMP, arrested three men without incident.

From Salmo RCMP, April 27, 2026

News Release - Salmo RCMP respond to demonstration near Nelway -

On April 24, 2026, Salmo RCMP responded to a demonstration on a forest service road near Nelway.

The road had been blocked by a small group of demonstrators opposing logging activity in the area, preventing a local contractor from accessing a job site to conduct construction work on the forest service road.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the group to leave the area on their own. The requests to leave were unsuccessful and police arrested two men. During the arrest, an officer was struck in the face by one of the men. A 75-year-old Nelway man was arrested for assault police with a weapon, and obstruction. A 37-year-old Nelway man was arrested for mischief and obstruction.

Both individuals were taken into custody without further incident and later released on undertakings. The investigation remains ongoing.

Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program - The City of Nelson and its Cultural Development Committee are pleased to announce the Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program. This program displays art by local and regional artists within the City’s indoor public spaces, promoting and reflecting the creative nature of Nelson.

“This program is a wonderful way to both support our talented and diverse pool of artists and bring a vibrancy to our City Hall, affirming the City’s commitment to supporting arts, culture and heritage,” says CDC Chair Sydney Black.

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide electronic images of their pieces, along with the medium, dimensions, value and artist bio. All artwork must be suitably framed and ready for hanging.

Submissions will be adjudicated by the CDC’s Public Art Working Group, and the accepted works will be installed in June 2026.

Call for artist housing: summer residency - We're looking for housesitting / billeting options for three visiting artists in Nelson from July 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The three artists work primarily in textiles across their individual practices and as a collective. They will be engaged in their summer residency at Oxygen Art Centre during this time period. The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.

Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.

As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.

Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.

Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

GoFundMe - Community Outreach for Nelson's Most Vulnerable: As a community of men this winter, we’ve been showing up consistently for people in Nelson who need it most.

Families grieving the loss of fathers to suicide and overdose.

The homeless population of our streets, living in the cold.
People who are struggling quietly and often forgotten.
We’ve brought hot meals and drinks, warm clothing, and simple human presence.
We’ve shared stew, chili and hot chocolate on cold days.
We’ve handed out toques, mitts, jackets, dental essentials, socks, underwear, and more.

And every time, something shifts. In them, and in us. The frequency grows, and more men get involved. Right now, we’re raising funds to directly support these outreaches: food, clothing, and essential supplies for people in Nelson who need care, warmth, and connection. We are not a charity or NGO. There are no overhead or admin costs.

100% of donations go directly to helping people.

We are simply a group of local men, Nelson Men’s Group, who have spent years doing deep inner work together. This work has shaped us into men who show up: for our families, for each other, and for our broader community in need.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history.

The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

It’s one thing to be told that a band was good. It’s another to hear it for yourself.

Among the many West Kootenay dance orchestras of the Big Band era, The Serenaders were in a class of their own. As the late W.J. Sullivan wrote in his book Growing Up in Trail BC During WW II: “In Trail in the 1940s there were dance bands and then there were dance bands. The really good ones, like the Serenaders, could play the Dorsey or the Harry James bands to a draw. They were that good.”

2026 Members Show & Sale - All NMAG Members were invited to participate. Gentle Resistance by Tracy Fillion - This ongoing project began with an interest in the intersection of design, sport, and feminism, and has evolved into a space to hold and transform growing internalized rage in response to widespread social, environmental, and human rights violations. The boxing glove serves as a central form—both a symbol of conflict and a container for emotion. Constructed through the slow, deliberate process of hand weaving and textile assembly, the work holds a tension between method and feeling: a quiet, careful making that contrasts with an undercurrent of anger.
