Media Release - Join us on May 5 as we gather in remembrance, solidarity, and action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). This day is a time to honour the lives lost, support families and communities, and raise awareness of the ongoing crisis.

We will begin at 1:00 pm with a march from Cottonwood Park to City Hall. Participants are encouraged to bring their drums as we walk together in unity and remembrance.

Following the march, we will gather at the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery for light snacks and refreshments. This will be a space to connect, reflect, and support one another.

Market - Mother's Day Baker Street Market Today

We’re excited to bring the Mother’s Day Garden Starter Market back to its original location in the 200–300 block of Baker Street! We’re also switching things up this year: the event will now run on Sunday, May 10th from 10am–3pm. Laurel Smith and Aaron Pasacreta will be performing.

The regular season officially begins on Saturday, May 16th and will run until Saturday, October 31st. We will wrap up the season with a big Halloween Market. As usual, the Saturday market runs from 9am to 2pm at Cottonwood Falls Park, rain or shine. Wednesday markets will kick off on June 3rd and run from 10am to 2pm on the 600 block of Baker Street and Hall Street Plaza. These will continue through to September 30th.

From the Nelson Police Department April 29, 2026

Media Release - Nelson Police Department respond to arson near Railway St. - On April 24, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m., the Nelson Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire outside a local business at Baker St & Railway St.

Officers attended and observed bushes along the front of the restaurant fully engulfed in flames, with the fire reaching approximately 30 feet high and threatening the entire front of the property. Officers deployed fire extinguishers; however, the blaze was too large to control.

Nelson Fire and Rescue arrived quickly and extinguished the fire before any further damage occurred. The Nelson Police Department would like to thank Nelson Fire and Rescue for their quick response and professionalism in preventing further damage to the property and surrounding area.

Police identified the male responsible for the fire and located him hiding inside a nearby residence. The male was arrested for arson and transported to the Nelson Police Department.

News Release - Salmo RCMP respond to threats complaint - On April 27, 2026, Salmo RCMP responded to a report involving threats towards police made by a man who alleged he was in possession of weapons and intended to use them at a downtown Salmo residence.

Due to the nature of the allegations and the proximity of the incident to a local school, officers attended the area and worked with school officials to place the school on hold and secure as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Officers located the man at his residence and engaged him in a brief negotiation. The situation was resolved without incident, and the man was safely arrested and taken into custody.

Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program - The City of Nelson and its Cultural Development Committee are pleased to announce the Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program. This program displays art by local and regional artists within the City’s indoor public spaces, promoting and reflecting the creative nature of Nelson.

“This program is a wonderful way to both support our talented and diverse pool of artists and bring a vibrancy to our City Hall, affirming the City’s commitment to supporting arts, culture and heritage,” says CDC Chair Sydney Black.

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide electronic images of their pieces, along with the medium, dimensions, value and artist bio. All artwork must be suitably framed and ready for hanging.

Submissions will be adjudicated by the CDC’s Public Art Working Group, and the accepted works will be installed in June 2026.

Call for artist housing: summer residency - We're looking for housesitting / billeting options for three visiting artists in Nelson from July 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The three artists work primarily in textiles across their individual practices and as a collective. They will be engaged in their summer residency at Oxygen Art Centre during this time period. The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.

Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.

As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.

Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.

Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

GoFundMe - Community Outreach for Nelson's Most Vulnerable: As a community of men this winter, we’ve been showing up consistently for people in Nelson who need it most.

Families grieving the loss of fathers to suicide and overdose.

The homeless population of our streets, living in the cold.
People who are struggling quietly and often forgotten.
We’ve brought hot meals and drinks, warm clothing, and simple human presence.
We’ve shared stew, chili and hot chocolate on cold days.
We’ve handed out toques, mitts, jackets, dental essentials, socks, underwear, and more.

And every time, something shifts. In them, and in us. The frequency grows, and more men get involved. Right now, we’re raising funds to directly support these outreaches: food, clothing, and essential supplies for people in Nelson who need care, warmth, and connection. We are not a charity or NGO. There are no overhead or admin costs.

100% of donations go directly to helping people.

We are simply a group of local men, Nelson Men’s Group, who have spent years doing deep inner work together. This work has shaped us into men who show up: for our families, for each other, and for our broader community in need.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history.

The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

It’s one thing to be told that a band was good. It’s another to hear it for yourself.

Among the many West Kootenay dance orchestras of the Big Band era, The Serenaders were in a class of their own. As the late W.J. Sullivan wrote in his book Growing Up in Trail BC During WW II: “In Trail in the 1940s there were dance bands and then there were dance bands. The really good ones, like the Serenaders, could play the Dorsey or the Harry James bands to a draw. They were that good.”

2026 Members Show & Sale - All NMAG Members were invited to participate. Our last members’ exhibition took place in 2023, and was a beautiful and eclectic display of the talent, dedication and passion that exists within the Nelson community and area. Work for sale is a 60/40 split between artist and the museum, providing an excellent opportunity for emerging artists to sell their work, as well as support the museum’s exhibitions and programming. Gentle Resistance by Tracy Fillion - This ongoing project began with an interest in the intersection of design, sport, and feminism, and has evolved into a space to hold and transform growing internalized rage in response to widespread social, environmental, and human rights violations. The boxing glove serves as a central form—both a symbol of conflict and a container for emotion. Constructed through the slow, deliberate process of hand weaving and textile assembly, the work holds a tension between method and feeling: a quiet, careful making that contrasts with an undercurrent of anger.
